11-18-2008 Avoiding negative influences.

This is a true story about a man named Victor Serobikoff.  When Victor was in school as a young man he had a hard time grasping his school work.  After many years of struggling his teacher finally told him that he was no good in school and he should quit and go to work instead.

So Victor did what his teacher recommended.  However, because he had a very limited education he only could work as a laborer.  The hours were long and the work was hard.  Finally, he got to the point where he wasn’t happy with what he was doing with his life so he decided to go back to school.  Before they could let him back in he had to take and IQ test to determine what level the school should start him at.

The IQ test revealed that Victor had the IQ of a genius!  Once Victor found out that he was a genius his life changed dramatically.  He became a very successful businessman, he became an author and he also became the President of the Mensa society, which is a special club for geniuses only.

The point of the story is that for a good portion of Victor’s life he acted as if he wasn’t smart because that’s what someone had told him.  You see, attitude are contagious, many times what people tell us becomes how we feel about ourselves.  If people say mean, nasty negative things about us – many times that’s how we feel about our abilities.

What’s the best defense against this?  “Avoid anything that would reduce my mental growth or physical health”.  We have to learn to avoid these type of people so their negative attitudes don’t grow on us.
